Awana Worldwide

History

The word Awana stands for Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed and comes from 2 Timothy 2:15. "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

Pastor Lance "Doc" Latham of the North Side Gospel Centre; Chicago,IL. started the Awana program in the 1940s. His goal was to reach children and teens who didn't go to church on Sundays. The Pals, And Pioneers Motto "The Other Boy for Christ" Chums, and Guards Motto "The Other Girl for Christ".

Art Rorheim; "Doc's" trusted friend; helped "Doc" and his wife develop the Awana program. Art is referred to as the Timothy of the Awana Ministry.

God blessed this new youth ministry through the 40's and into the 50's, when it was officially organised. Many other Churches heard about Awana and asked if they could start clubs too.

In 1973 the first Canadian Awana Clubs began. Throughout the next 46 years the Awana     ministry spread around the world. In 1986 the "Awana Youth Association" became "Awana Clubs International." By 1994 More than 70 countries provided the Awana Clubs and material was printed in at least 15 languages.
